השתתפתי בועידה של מפלגת העבודה והתאכזבתי – זו הועידה הראשונה במתכונת מלאה עם שלי àיחימוביץ' כיו"ר המפלגה. בתור תומך של שלי שעבד קשה במשך חצי שנה על מנת להביא אותה לנצחון בפריימריז קיוויתי לחידוש, התרוממות רוח, חזון, משהו. לא היה כאן כלום. כן הייתה ישיבת ועידה טיפוסית של מפלגת העבודה. מפלגת מפאי בהתגלמותה. חזרה לעתיד. רטרו. לקחו את דוד ליבאי, סוס מלחמות ותיק שמכיר את כל השטיקים ויכול ללמד גם שועלים כמו עמיר פרץ שיעור אחד או שניים ונתנו לו לנהל את הועידה. יאמר לזכותו של ליבאי שהוא יודע איך להשחיל לך את זה ככה שאתה גם חושב שזה בסדר. בקיצור, יושבת הראש נאמה נאום סטנדרטי לחלוטין, קצת טייקונים, קצת חברתי, קצת כלכלי, קצת סוציאל-דמוקרטי, קצת נגד ביבי, קצת בעד עיני, חצי מילה על מדיני (שלא יגידו..), משהו מינורי לחלוטין. מדינת ישראל נמצאת היום באחת התקופות הקשות של ההיסטוריה הקצרה שלה, מפלגת העבודה אמורה להוות אלטרנטיבה שלטונית וזה מה שיש ליו"ר המפלגה להגיד ?

אחר כך דיבר עמיר פרץ, נכנס בעיני (שהיה נוכח באולם), גרם למהומה לא קטנה אך בגדול דיבר דברי אמת על ההסכם השערורייתי בין מפלגת העבודה להסתדרות. הבעיה עם עמיר שיש לו חמאה על הראש. הטפות מוסר מעבריין אנטי-דמוקרטי סידרתי כמוהו, מה גם שהוא חתם על ההסכם המקורי עם ההסתדרות שמהווה בסיס להסכם החדש, לא שוות הרבה.  עכשיו הוא רואה את האור ? לגמרי במקרה בדיוק שזה מתאים לו פוליטית, גם מול עיני וגם מול שלי ? אחר כך דיבר פואד – מה שאני זוכר מנאומו זה שהוא אמר לביבי בפגישה עמו שמפלגת העבודה תהיה המפלגה השנייה בגודלה בבחירות הבאות לכנסת. אני בתמימותי חשבתי שאנחנו רוצים להיות המפלגה הגדולה בבחירות הבאות. לא מספיק שיושבת הראש כל הזמן מורידה ציפיות אז עכשיו פואד בעקבותיה ? אם זה ממשיך כך לא נהיה אפילו המפלגה השלישית בגודלה. ודבריו של בוזי' ? אין טעם להרחיב את הדיבור. כמובן, אחרי שכל החשובים (ושלושה פחות חשובים) דיברו, נסגר הדיון במסגרתו היה ניתן להשמיע נאומים (והייתה רשימה ארוכה של חברי מפלגה שרצו לדבר). כמובן הצביעו על הקטע של ההשתקה וכמובן היא התקבלה ברוב גדול. ככה זה במפלגה דמוקרטית. מתכננים את ההצבעה אחרי הדיון – הדיון מתארך, אנשים רוצים ללכת הביתה, מישהו בכיר מגיש הצעה לסדר, מקיימים הצבעה והדיון נסגר. עכשיו יש זמן לקיים את ההצבעה שהייתה אמורה להתקיים רק בסוף הדיון.

לא יודע איך הרגישו הצעירים שהשתתפו בועידה, היו לא מעט, צעירים שהגיעו למפלגה עם שלי יחימוביץ' . הם אמורים להיות ההבטחה הגדולה של המפלגה. אני רק יכול להגיד שאני הרגשתי ממש, אבל ממש לא טוב. שלי באה למפלגה כהבטחה גדולה: אישה דעתנית, אמיצה, לא לוקחת שבויים. היה לה קארט בלאנש לעשות מה שהיא רוצה עם המפלגה ובמפלגה. הייתה כאן הזדמנות לשינויים דרמטיים וכולם היו מקבלים אותם בשמחה או לפחות הבנה. אבל לא. לשלי יש את הקטע האנכרוניסטי – היא רוצה מה שהיה בעבר. המפלגה של פעם. היום זה לא מתאים. היא צריכה לדעת את זה. היא גייסה את רוב התומכים שלה באמצעות הרשתות החברתיות באינטרנט.  היום לא מתגעגעים למפלגת מפאי. מתגעגעים לדמוקרטיה אמיתית. רוצים להשפיע, לא להיות כלים בתיאטרון מאורגן היטב. זה לא יעבוד לאורך זמן. המחאה החברתית לא תצטרף למפלגת העבודה אם אין בה דמוקרטיה אמיתית. אם אין בה דמוקרטיה אמיתית היא גם לא תהווה אלטנרטיבה לשלטון ותקום מפלגה אחרת.

Déjà vu All Over Again

I participated in the recent Labor Party Congress and was disappointed – this was the first full party congress under the leadership of Shelly Yechimovic as chairperson. As a supporter who worked hard for half a year to help her to victory in the primaries,  I was hoping for renewal, high spirits, vision, something. Nothing of the sort. There was just a typical Labor Party conference. A real MAPAI clone. Back to the future. Retro.

They took Prof. David Libai, an old warhorse who knows all the shtiks and can even teach old foxes like Amir Peretz a lesson or or two and let him preside over the congress. It could be said in Libai's favor that he knows how to stick it to people in a way that even they think it's O.K.

In short, the chairperson (Shelly) gave a totally standard speech, a little on tycoons, a little social, a little economy, a little social-democratic, a little against Bibi, a little for Eini, half a word on the Peace Process (to avoid undue criticism…), something totally minor. The State of Israel is today in one of the most difficult periods of it's short history, the Labor Party is supposed to present an alternative to the government and this is what the chairperson had to say ?

Next in line to speak was Amir Peretz and he attacked Histadrut chief Ofer Eini (who was present in the hall), causing quite a ruckus but mainly spoke the truth about the scandalous agreement between Labor and the Histadrut Trade Union. The problem with Amir is that his checkered past as a serial violator of democratic rules and his involvement in the original deal with the Histadrut which served as a blueprint for the present one, makes it difficult to relate to his criticism seriously. Now he sees the light ? Coincidentally, just when it suits him politically both vis-a-vis Eini and Shelly ?

Next to speak was Fuad Ben Eliezer – what I remember from his speech was that he told Bibi in a recent meeting that Labor will be the second largest party in the Knesset following the coming elections. And I thought we were trying to be number one. Is it not enough that Shelly Yechimovic continuously lowers expectations, now Fuad follows suit? If this keeps going we won't even be the third largest party in the Knesset. And what did Herzog have to say ? Nothing much to write home about. And naturally, after the bigwigs had their say (and three speakers of lesser stature), the discussion which was supposed to give party members the opportunity to voice their opinion (there was a long list of people who had signed up to speak) was closed. Naturally this silencing was voted upon and, not surprisingly, passed with a large majority. This is the way it works in a democratic party.  According to the program, the vote was planned to take place after the discussion – when the discussion ran on for too long and people wanted to go home, someone from among the bigwigs submitted a motion to stop the discussion and vote. A vote was called instantly on the motion and, not surprisingly, it passed. Now there was time to vote, instead of waiting for the end of the discussion.

I don't know how the many young people who were present and who were brought into the party by Shelly Yechimovic must have felt. They are supposed to be the great promise of the party. I only can say that I felt really bad. Shelly came to the party as a great promise: An opinionated woman, courageous, taking no prisoners. She had a free hand to do what she wanted with the party and in the party. There was an opportunity for major and dramatic changes and all of them would have been received with applause or at least understanding. But no. Shelly has this anachronistic side to her, she wants what was in the past. The party that was. Today, that doesn't cut it. She has to know that. She is the one who recruited most of her followers through the internet and social networks. None of them miss the MAPAI party of the old days. They miss true democracy. They want to influence, they don't want to be part of a carefully staged theater production. This won't work over time. The public protesters will not join Labor if there is no true democracy in the party. If there is no democracy , Labor will not be an alternative to the present government and another party will be formed.
