המצב הפוליטי הנוכחי במדינת ישראל הוא כזה שרוב האזרחים משלימים עמו. זאת בעיקר משום שלכאורה אין אלטרנטיבה אמיתית נראית לעין לשלטון הליכוד. מפלגת העבודה שמתיימרת להיות המפלגה השניה בגודלה בכנסת בבחירות הבאות מסרבת בעקשנות להעמיד את עצמה כאלטרנטיבה לשלטון ומקבלת את המציאות כפי שהיא בהכנעה גמורה. לטענתה של יו"ר שלי יחימוביץ', הסבירות שהמפלגה תרכיב את הממשלה הבאה היא נמוכה. לא ברור איך ניתן לצפות מציבור שנמאס לו משלטונו של הליכוד ושל בנימין נתניהו להצביע עבור מפלגה שבעצמה לא מאמינה ביכולתה להגיע לשלטון ובנוסף גם לא מציגה חזון כולל. קו דק עובר בין הערכה נכונה של המציאות לבין הויתור על יצירת מציאות אחרת, מציאות בה מפלגת העבודה כן יכולה להגיע לשלטון. לעת עתה, הנהגת המפלגה מסתפקת אך ורק בפעילות בתוך המציאות הקיימת אך לא פועלת על מנת להוביל למציאות טובה יותר למדינת ישראל לה החברים כמהים בכל המישורים ולא רק בתחום החברתי כלכלי.
מה ניתן לעשות בהנחה שהנהגת המפלגה החליטה לקדם את המפלגה להיות מפלגת האופוזיציה העיקרית הבאה ולא להרכיב את הממשלה הבאה ? אפשרות אחת היא לנסות ולשכנע את ההנהגה לשנות את גישתה שנראית, על פניה, תבוסתנית.
אפשרות נוספת היא ליצור התנגדות בתוך המפלגה לדרך הפעולה הנוכחית של ההנהגה, או לפחות לנסות ליצור דיון במוסדות המפלגה. אך על פי הניסיון בעבר במקרים דומים (כאשר תפקוד הההנהגה לא ענה על הציפיות של חלק גדול מהחברים) , הדיון לא צלח. זאת כי חברי המוסדות שחרדים למקומם, לא אוהבים לזהות את עצמם כמבקרי פעילות ההנהגה באופן גלוי ומעדיפים להשחיר את ההנהגה מאחורי הקלעים מאשר להביע את ביקורתם בגלוי. כמו כן שומעים קולות ש"צריך לתת ליו"ר זמן", תקופה שיכולה ללא כל קושי להימשך עד לבחירות הבאות.
אפשרות שלישית שניתן לשקול היא יצירת אופוזיציה של ממש בתוך המפלגה באמצעות קבוצה של פעילים ששואבים את כוחם מהיותם קבוצה בעלת השפעה כאשר חבריה הם חברים ותיקים וצעירים כאחד, כולל תומכים מובהקים של היו"ר בבפריימריז. זו אופציה ריאלית אך סיכוייה להצליח מוגבלים כל עוד לא ניתן לזהות אישיות משמעותית שתוביל אותה ויכולה להיות אלטרנטיבה ליו"ר הנבחר אם וכאשר זה יהיה רלוונטי. ברור שאופוזיציה כזאת לא יכולה להתאגד סביב אחד המתחרים שהיו ליו"ר אלא חייבת להתאגד רק סביב אישיות אחרת, מבטיחה יותר. יש מקום לשקול את האופציה האחרונה אך בו בזמן בהחלט יתכן שכמה חברים יבחרו באופציה נוספת בעלת סיכויים להצליח בנסיבות הנוכחיות וזאת האופציה של יצירת אופוזיציה מחוץ למפלגה. התנהלות היו"ר החדשה שמתעקשת למרכז את המפלגה עד כדי אבסורד, מצביעה על חוסר רגישות מצבית כתוצאה ממנה המפלגה עלולה להפסיד שוב חלק לא מבוטל מציבור מצביעיה. מופז מרכז, ליבני מרכז, לפיד מרכז, דרעי יהיה מרכז וגם מפלגת העבודה מרכז. אז למה להצביע למפלגת העבודה ? רק בגלל הנושא החברתי/כלכלי שנמצא במרכז הקונצנסוס ומפלגות אחרות יכולות לאמץ בקלות יחסית ? יש לי חדשות: המחאה ממתינה למפלגה. היא לא פותחת לחברי המחאה את הדלת. מסיבות לא ברורות המפלגה לא נענית, לעת עתה, לציבור הגדול שנמצא מחוץ להליך הפוליטי ורוצה להתחבר. מפלגת העבודה היא הכתובת הטבעית אך היא, משום מה לא פותחת את הדלת ולא מזמינה את המחאה פנימה. למה לא ? מי מה בדיוק מפחדים ?
It appears that most Israelis have come to terms with the present political situation because of the difficulty to identify a real alternative to the Likud government. Labor which wants to be the second largest party in the Knesset in the next elections, steadfastly refuses to position itself as an alternative to the present government and accepts the situation submissively. According to chairperson Shelly Yechimovitch, the party is unikely to form the next government. How are citizens who have had enough of the Likud government and Bibi Netanyahu expected to put their trust in a party that doesn't believe in its own ability to win the elections and in addition doesn't propose an all inclusive political vision ? There is a fine line between accepting reality and giving up on changing it into a reality in which Labor will form the government. At this time, the party leadership is resigned to the situation and is not willing to lead to a better reality in many areas where party members long for change, not only in social and economic aspects.
What can be done, assuming the party leadership has decided to become the main opposition party and not to form the nex government ? One possibility is to try and convince party leaders to change their approach, which, on the face of it, appears defeatist.
Another option is to create an opposition within the party to the present path of action of the leadership, or at least to try to initiate a discussion in the party institutions. Based on past experience in similar instances (when leadership performance had become unacceptable to many party members), discussions if held at all, were futile. Members of party institutions fear for their positions, do not like to identify themselves openly as critics of leadership conduct and prefer to denigrate leaders behind their back rather than speak out. In addition there are the ongoing calls "to give the chairperson time", time which easily can last until the next elections.
A third option that should be considered is to create a real opposition within the party with the help of activists that derive their power from their influence, veteran party members and newcomers alike, including supporters of the chairperson during the primaries. This is a realistic option whose chances to succeed remain limited as long as it is difficult to identify a serious challenger who could lead and be an alternative to the present chairperson if and when that becomes relevant. It is obvious that such an opposition can not form around one of the former challengers to the chairmanship but must group around a new, more promising individual. In addition to the latter option another possibility should be considered which might, under present circumstances, harbour chances for success: Some members may decide to create an opposition outside the party. The new chairperson is hell-bent on moving the party to the center of the political spectrum, a move devoid of any situational awareness which may cause the party, once again, lose a not insignificant percentage of its traditional voters. Mofaz is center, Livni is center, Lapid is center and Deri will be center well. So why should anyone vote Labor ? Only because of the socio-economic agenda which is agreeable to almost anyone and other parties can coopt with relative ease ? Newsflash: The protest movement is waiting for Labor. Until now, it hasn't opened the door to the movement. For reasons not clear, the party remains unresponsive to the large group of people who are alienated from the political process and want to connect. Labor is their natural address but for some reason doesn't open the door and invite them in. Why not ? What could happen ?
