אירוע ההשקה של "החוג להנעה מדינית" הצליח מעל למצופה. החוג החדש הוקם במפלגת העבודה על מנת לקיים דיון על התהליך המדיני ולקדמו הן במפלגה והן בתקשורת ומול הציבור בכללותו. זאת על רקע חוסר המעש של הממשלה המכהנת והדחקת הנושא גם בתוך מפלגת העבודה.

יותר מ-80 אנשים הצטופפו בסניף ברודצקי על מנת לתת תשובה הולמת לכל אלה שחשבו לאחרונה שרק מחוץ למפלגה ניתן לקדם את התהליך המדיני. אחרי שמזכ"ל המפלגה חיליק בר שנחת רק שעה קצרה לפני האירוע מסיור בארה"ב ברך את הקהל ויו"ר החוג שרי סלע סקרה את מטרות החוג ואת הרקע להקמתו, תארו פרופ' אלעאי אלון מאוניברסיטת ת"א וגדי בלטיאנסקי מנכ"ל יוזמת ז'נבה את היוזמה הערבית ויוזמת קלינטון וז'נבה. ח"כ יצחק (בוג'י) הרצוג נתן סקירה מדינית ממצאת ועמד במקצת גם על התסכולים שמלווים אותו בעקבות התקיעות בסוגיה המדינית. התקשורת בוחרת לא לטפל בנושא המדיני ברצינות למרות חשיבותו והנושא הכלכלי/חברתי ממשיך לתפוס חלק ניכר מהכותרות וגם מזמנה של יו"ר המפלגה.

אין ספק שהנוכחות המכובדת של חברי מפלגת העבודה באירוע ההשקה מסמלת תפנית מעודדת בהתייחסות לנושא ומסמנת התחלה חדשה של דיון שדעך על רקע העברת מרכז הכובד של פעילות המפלגה מול הציבור לנושא החברתי הכלכלי. התמקדות המפלגה בנושא החברתי/כלכלי חשובה, מבורכת, תשרת את המפלגה בהתמודדות בבחירות הבאות ותקל עלייה לגייס קהלים חדשים לשורותיה אך התעסקות רק בנושאים הנ"ל תהפוך את מפלגת העבודה למפלגת נישה חד-ממדית שמתנתקת מהמקורות ההוליסטים שלה. הקמת החוג המדיני וחידוש הדיון בתהליך המדיני תחזק את היכולת של המפלגה להציב חזון כולל לציבור ולהיות אלטרנטיבה אמיתית לממשלה שלא רק פוגעת בשכבות החלשות בחברה אלא גם מדרדרת את מדינת ישראל לאי-וודאות מדינית חסרת תקווה.

The opening event of the Working Group for the Advancement of the Political Process succeeded beyond expectations. The new group was created within the Labor party in order to maintain and promote an ongoing debate on the political process within the party, vis-a-vis the media and with the public at large. This on the background of a total absence of government activities in this regard and the sidelining of the subject within Labor.

More than 80 people crowded the Ramat Aviv Party branch giving a suitable response to all those who thought that a political process could only be advanced from outside the party. After the Secretary General of the party, Hilik Bar who had arrived an hour earlier from a trip to the US, opened with his greetings, Ms. Sari Sela, chairperson of the working group proceeded to outline its aims and the background for its creation. This was followed by short briefings by Prof. Ilai Alon from Tel-Aviv University on the Arab initiative and the Director of the Geneva Initiative, Gadi Baltiansky who talked about the Clinton proposals and the Geneva inititative. Member of Knesset Isaac Herzog reviewed the political situation and gave an indication of some of his frustrations at a time when the political process is stuck. The media choose not to deal with the political process in earnest  and the social and economic issues get most of the headlines grabbing most of the attention of the party's chairperson.

There is no doubt that the considerable attendance of party members at this opening event signifies an encouraging change in the attitude towards this subject and a new beginning of a debate that had faded once Labor decided to emphasize, vis-a-vis the public , discussions mainly of social and economic issues. Labor's focus on the social and economic issues is important, commendable, will serve the party in the upcoming elections and facilitates the signing up of new members. Nevertheless the single-minded preoccupation with these issues alone will turn the party into a one-dimensional niche party detached from its holistic roots. The creation of the Working Group for the Advancement of the Political Process and the associated renewal of the debate will strengthen the party's ability to present the public with an all-encompassing vision and thus enable it become a real alternative to the present governing coalition which not only harms the weakest segments of society but also leads the State of Israel down a path of political uncertainty without any hope.
