שלי יחמוביץ' מכהנת כשלושה חודשים כיו"ר מפלגת העבודה. היא נבחרה לתפקיד ברוב משמעותי. הרבה אנשים, בתוך המפלגה ומחוצה לה קיוו שהיא תוכל לחולל שינוי של ממש במפלגה שעמדה לפני שקיעה סופית.
כל יום שעובר מלמד כי תקווה זו, ככל הנראה לא תתממש. במקום להזניק את המפלגה, להוביל אותה ולקבוע עובדות בשטח, עובדות שתחייבנה את המפלגה לדרך חדשה, דמוקרטית יותר, היא עושה בדיוק את ההיפך וצוללת לתוך הבוץ של העסקנות. שם היא תקועה, עד היום. הברית הלא כל כך קדושה עם עופר עיני הופכת לנטל כי היא מנציחה, לעת עתה, מחוייבויות כלפי ההסתדרות והאינטרסים שלה שאינן מתיישבות עם האינטרסים של מפלגת העבודה שאמורה לייצג את כולם, לא רק את הוועדים החזקים. חוסר פעילות כלשהי מול מגזר המיעוטים שממתינים לזיק של תקווה מהמפלגה, העדר כל מאמץ רציני מצד היו"ר כלפי נושאי חוץ ובטחון בתקופה בה נושאים אלו מרכזיים בהוויה היומית של מדינת ישראל, כל אלה מתחברים להתנהלות די שטחית גם בנושאי הדגל של היו"ר, נושאי חברה וכלכלה. לא יתכן שכל העיסוק שלה יתמקד בתספורות שהטייקונים עושים לנכסי הציבור או לפגיעה במקומות עבודה כתוצאה מהכשלים של טייקון זה או אחר. אלה נושאים חשובים, ללא ספק אך שלי יחימוביץ' איננה סתם חברת כנסת שצריכה להתספק בהופעות קצרות בתקשורת בה היא בשתי דקות אומרת את כל הדברים הנכונים.
שלי יחימוביץ' היא יושבת הראש של מפלגה לאומית שחייבת להציג אג'נדה שלמה מול הציבור כבר עכשיו, אלטרנטיבה כוללת של ממש למדיניות הבלתי אפשרית של הממשלה הנוכחית שפוגעת בציבור, במערכת היחסים של מדינת ישראל עם העולם ובמה לא. היא חייבת להציג חזון אמיתי לעתיד טוב יותר. לעת עתה, שלי יחימוביץ' איננה מספקת את הסחורה והזמן אוזל.
אני לא רוצה להכנס לניתוחים מה הן הסיבות לכך שיו"ר המפלגה מסרבת לפרוץ קדימה בעיתוי שממש משווע לאלטרנטיבה אמיתית לשלטון נתניהו אך אין לי כל ספק שהעובדה שבמידה רבה היא פועלת לבדה תורמת לכך. אומנם יש ליו"ר עוזרים אך לרוב מדובר בחברי מפלגה צעירים שמשרתים אותה ועוזרים לה בפעילות היום יומית. לפי מיטב ידיעתי אין לה "מטבחון" של יועצים, צוות אסטרטגי, אנשים בעלי שיעור קומה שיכולים להגיד ליו"ר את האמת, שיכולים לאתגר אותה ולא רק לקבל את שקול דעתה. ההחלטה האחרונה להגיש הצעת חוק לקיצור תקופת הצינון של בכירי מערכת הבטחון היא דוגמה לכך. לא סביר שיו"ר מפלגה מגישה כזאת הצעה ללא התייעצות מקיפה, גם עם מוסדות המפלגה. לא בטוח שיש צורך לכנס את המוסדות אך לפחות יש מקום להתייעץ עם חברי מוסדות, לא רק עם התומכים שלה. הנאמר לעיל נכון כמובן אלא אם מדובר ב"ספין"…
בינתיים שלי יחימוביץ' כמעט לא מפספסת הזדמנות לפגוע בתדמית שלה כמחוללת שינוי. הדבר חמור כי מדובר בפגיעה נוספת בהמשך של שורה של פגיעות באימון הציבור בתהליך הפוליטי והדמוקרטי בארץ. לא מעט ממצביעי שלי יחימוביץ' בפריימריס הם אנשים שהיו קרובים לאובדן תקווה בתהליך הדמוקרטי. שלי יחימוביץ' – התחילי לחולל שינוי עכשיו לפני שזה מאוחר מידי.
Shelly Yechimovic, what will be ?
Shelly Yechimovic is has been chairperson of the Labor Party for three months now. She was elected to the office by a substantial margin. Many people in the party and outside were hopeful that she would be able to bring about a real change in a party which was on the verge of demise.
As the days pass it becomes apparent that these hopes are not likely to be realized. Instead of jumpstarting the party, leading it and establishing facts on the ground that would commit the party to a new, more democratic path, she does just the opposite and dives into the swamp of petty party politics. There she is stuck, until now. The not so holy alliance with Ofer Eini is turning into a burden as it perpetuates commitments to the Histadrut Labor Union and its interests that do not coincide with those of the Labor Party which must represent all, not only the powerful worker committees. A total absence of an effort to strengthen minorities who are waiting for a glimmer of hope from Labor and no mentionable activities by the chairperson on foreign relations and security in a period where these subjects are central to the daily lives of Israeli citizens, join together with a rather shallow handling of chairperson's standard bearers, social and economic issues. It is unreasonable that all she deals with are haircuts to public assets dished out by tycoons or the impact on unemployment of the actions of this or that tycoon. By all means, these are important subjects but Shelly Yechimovic is not a run of the mill Member of Knesset who has to limit herself to short appearances in the media where she says all the right things in two minutes.
Shelly Yechimovic is the chairperson of a national party that must present a full agenda to the public already now, a total alternative to the impossible policies of the present government that harm the public, damage our relations with the world and what not.
She must present a real vision for a better future. At this time, Shelly Yechimovic doesn't deliver and time is running out.
I don't want to speculate on the reasons for the chairperson's refusal to charge ahead at a time which screams for a real alternative to Netanyahu's government but there is no doubt in my mind that much has to do with the fact that she largely operates on her own. While she has several aides, most of them are youngsters who support her daily activities.To the best of my knowledge she has no "kitchen cabinet" of advisors, a strategy team, or some individuals of stature who can tell her the truth and challenge her and not only accept her positions. Her recent decision to propose a law to shorten the cooling off period for high ranking military personnel who want to go into politics is a case in point. It is unreasonable that as head of the party she would not take advice with party members or the various party institutions. Convening the institutions for this would probably not be necessary but at least ranking members should be consulted, not only her supporters. That is, unless this was only a spin.
In the meantime Shelly Yechimovic hardly misses an opportunity to harm her image as an agent for change.This is particularly grave since we are talking about a further erosion of the public's trust in the politcial process and democracy in the country. Quite a few of those who voted for her in the primary elections are people who were close to giving up hope in the democratic process. Shelly Yechimovic, please start initiating real changes now before it is too late.
