לקראת הבחירות בהסתדרות מסתמנת התנגשות של ממש בין עמיר פרץ ו/או איתן כבל לבין הנהגת מפלגת העבודה. שלי יחימוביץ' הצליחה לשכנע את ועידת המפלגה שעופר עיני הוא מועמד המפלגה לתפקיד יו"ר ההסתדרות גם אם הוא לא רץ ברשימה של המפלגה אלא ברשימה משלו. חלק גדול מחברי המפלגה, גם אלה שהרימו את ידם לאישור המלצת  יוה"ר בועידה הרגישו חוסר נחת (בלשון המעטה) עם הסידור הזה וברור שגם אם יוה"ר חושבת שעופר עיני הוא המועמד המתאים ביותר לתפקיד ראש ההסתדרות, היא מחזירה כאן חוב פוליטי עבור הסיוע שקבלה מעיני וההסתדרות במהלך הפריימריס.

במידה ובשבוע הקרוב יאשר בית המפשט את המועמדות של כבל והוא או עמיר פרץ אכן יתמודד בניגוד להחלטת הועידה, יש, לכאורה בסיס להוציא את החברים מחוץ לשורות המפלגה. בכל מקרה יש כאן ערעור לא רק על מנהיגותה של יוה"ר  אלא גם על החלטה דמוקרטית של הועידה, החלטה שאף אחד לא ערער על חוקיותה.

עמיר פרץ ואיתן כבל, ללא ספק, ערים למצב הנ"ל אך ממשיכים בהתמודדות כאשר קיימות שתי אפשרויות (לפחות): ההתמודות תצא לפועל, לא תהיה תגובה עלימה של המפלגה והיא תכיל את הערעור על מנהיגות היו"ר ועל החלטת הועידה. לחילופין, הנהגת המפלגה תפעל להרחיק את החבורה השורדת משורותיה. מבחינת המפלגה, שתי האופציות גרועות ועדיף להמנע מההתמודדות.

בזמן שההתנגשות הזאת עומדת להתרחש צועד שאול מופז לקראת ניצחון בפריימריס בקדימה. אחרי שינצח הוא יחבק את ציפי ליבני ואת תומכיה, בסבירות גבוהה יקח את קדימה שמאלה ויחבק  בשמחה אמיתית את עמיר פרץ, את איתן כבל ואת כל התומכים שלהם.

יש חברי מפלגה (לא מעטים) שזוכרים לעמיר פרץ לרעה את פרישתו ל"עם אחד" ויברכו על עזיבתו (אם יעזוב) אך ברור שהמתווה הנ"ל, אם יתממש, יהיה אסון עבור מפלגת העבודה שתשאר חיוורת ולא רק מהפחד ממה שיקרה לה בבחירות הקרובות.

אני פונה לכל החברים שביכולתם להשפיע על המעורבים בתהליך הרסני זה לעצור את הדהירה הזאת, לאחד את השורות ולוותר הפעם על התמודדות מול עופר עיני, התמודדות שבמקומה בהיבט המוסרי אך הרת אסון בתוצאותיה הפוטנציאליות. מאידח, אם החברים עמיר ו/או איתן כן יתמודדו אני מצפה מהנהגת המפלגה לנהוג באיפוק ולא לגרום לפירוק המפלגה.

As we are approaching the elections for the Histadrut, there are clear indications for an impending collision between Amir Peretz and/or Eytan Cabel and the leadership of the Labor Party. Shelly Yechimovich succeeded in convincing Labor's Central Committee that Ofer Eini, the present Chairman of the Histadrut, should be Labor's candidate for reelection although he is not competing on the Labor ticket but running on a ticket of his own. Quite a lot of Labor's members, including many of those who raised their hand when the Chairperson's proposal to that effect was put to a vote, feel uneasy with this arrangement. It is clear that even though the Chairperson may really think that Ofer Eini is the best candidate for Chairman of the Histadrut, she is likely to be returning a political debt for the support she got from him while running to head Labor.

Should the court next week permit the candidacy of Eytan Cabel and he or Amir Peretz will really compete for head of the Histadrut in contravention of the decision of Labor's Central Committee, there is, ostensibly, cause to expell them from the party. In any case they are challenging not only the leadership of the Chairperson but also a democratic decision of the Central Committee, one that no one ever claimed to be illegitimate.

Undoubtedly, Amir Peretz and Eytan Cabel are aware of the above situation but continue with their efforts and there are (at least) two options: The election challenge will be brought, there will be no strong reaction from Labor's leadership and the Chairperson will contain the challenge to the Central Committee's decision. The alternative could be that Labor's leadership would actively try to expell the two troublemakers. From the viewpoint of Labor, both options are poor and it would be much preferable to avoid the electoral challenge to Ofer Eini's reign in the first place.

At the same time as this collision is about to happen, Shaul Mofaz is marching towards victory in Kadima's primary elections. After his victory he will embrace Tsippy Livni and her supporters, very likely take Kadima left and will be happy to include Amir Peretz, Eytan Cabel and all their supporters into the party.

There are (quite a few) Labor members who remember Amir's departure to "One People" several years ago and would only be too happy to see him go (if he goes) but it should be clear to everyone that this scenario, should it play out, would be a disaster for Labor which would turn pale and not only from fear of what will happen in the upcoming elections.

I call upon all of you who are able to influence those involved in this destructive process and help stop this race, close the ranks and give up on challenging Ofer Eini, a worthy challenge from a moral point of view but one fraught with a potentially disastrous outcome for Labor. On the other hand, should Amir Peretz and/or Eytan Cable go ahead with their plan I expect Labor's leadership to act with restraint and not cause the party to break up.
